Which bow is better for beginners? --- Traditional bow

Jan 14,2025 | CHN Archery

If you want to start from the difficult to the easy, I recommend the traditional bow. The premise is to have a lot of time to practice. The traditional bow has no sights and arrow rests, which tests the consistency of the action the most. After practicing the traditional bow well, it will be easy to choose other bows.

If you don’t have much time to practice and are eager to get visible results, then the competitive recurve bow is recommended as an entry point. The sights and bow ropes that come with the economic recurve bow can make the archer’s level visible in a short time or even in an afternoon.

The traditional bow is the simplest in terms of equipment. There is no bow window, no arrow rest, and no sights on the bow. Everything must be done by the archer himself.

It is generally recognized that traditional bows are difficult to use, and there may be several reasons:

First, the traditional bow shooting method is relatively special:

the current mainstream shooting method of traditional bows is thumb string hooking, which is difficult for novices to master, unlike the three-finger string hooking method of other bows, which is so intuitive. In addition, the protective gear of traditional bows, the thumb ring, also needs to fit the hand very well, and it is basically customized in the later period.

Secondly, the front hand needs to act as an arrow rest. Since there is nothing to help aim, the results of novices are often terrible, which is very devastating to their confidence. But slowly, you will find a feeling of constantly honing yourself.

Traditional bows give everything back to the archer himself, and you need to always look at yourself instead of the target to shoot every arrow well.

Another unique protective gear of traditional bows is the thumb ring, which is worn on the thumb of the string hooking hand to help hook the string and protect the thumb. A handy thumb ring can significantly improve the efficiency of practice.

It is actually not recommended to use some soft thumb rings for beginners. If the release is not practiced well, the string will be disturbed obviously. It is recommended to start directly with hard thumb rings.

Finally, for beginners, you must ensure safety. Safety first!

Remember the rules of archery:

Don't point arrows at people, don't release bows in vain, pull arrows together, and don't put arrows in front of people.
